The Labrador was originally bred as a fisherman’s companion on the island of Newfoundland. This was a job that required Labs to have a waterproof coat thick enough to withstand very low temperatures, and have an ability to swim in strong currents and for long periods of time. Once Labs reached England, their role changed to that of fetching game at shoots. They also find themselves working as therapy and military dogs.
